PROMPT : CHOIR

“Hurry up, Dana! If we’re late for Choir practice, I am SO blaming you!” Yuki stood by the front door, hopping from one foot to the other. Her shiny black hair swished in time with her graceful, if hurried movements.

Dana rolled her eyes. “I’m coming, Carmina is taking her time and you know I can’t leave her.”

“If you don’t leave her, I’ll leave both of you!” Yuki threw back. “We’re going to be late and I’m going to lose my perfect attendance streak!”

“No one’s losing any streak,” Carmina said, calmly. “I’m here and you can both quit freaking out on me, alright? Let’s go.”

Yuki glowered. “Thanks a lot—now you can open the portal. I don’t think I’m in the right frame of mind anymore.”

“If you don’t do it, it won’t count for your attendance,” Carmina said, quietly. “Just spin a quick one. I’ll stabilize it for you.”

Dana bit her lip. “Did something happen?”

“The Larsen’s lost the twins,” Carmina offered a pained smile. “We should visit them later. Sing a bit and all.”

Yuki’s hands shook. “They want the whole family gone? We just sang for the twins last week and-“

Dana grew pale with rage. “The Town Council told you that?”

Carmina’s expression grew strained. “We really shouldn’t talk about this here,” she said, delicately. “We need to hurry.”

Yuki said nothing, but spun the portal to life. There was an indescribable look in her face and then she reached up, tucking a strand of pitch black hair behind one ear. A trademark gesture, but also a note of solidarity.

There, on her pale neck, stood the matching tattoo to celebrate their coming of age as Sirens.

Dana began to cry.

Carmina wrapped an arm around each of them.

The glowing blue portal flared to life beneath their feet, sucking them downward.
